WHO is overseeing the rising cases of Hepatitis in children, after six had to undergo liver transplants across the UK. The healthcare regulators have been informed about 10 severe cases of acute hepatitis in children in Scotland on April 5th with further addition of 74 cases in the rest of the UK. Dr Meera Chand, the director of clinical and emerging infections at the UK Health Security Agency stated that the officials are working on the investigation regarding the possible factors which may have caused the children to be admitted to the hospital with liver inflammation.

She added that one possible connection in the investigation is related to adenovirus infection however a thorough investigation is needed. Dr Chand advised that normal hygiene measures should be taken including handwashing, supervising children, and respiratory hygiene to prevent the potential spreading of infection. Also, the agency is calling on parents and guardians to inform them about the signs of hepatitis including jaundice, etc.

According to WHO, lab tests have excluded the known pathogenic causes of hepatitis and they are awaiting the results of further tests for infections, chemicals, and toxins. Since initial reporting, fewer cases have been reported in Ireland and Spain as well.
